Enter a world of soft attention and sudden interruption
Where nothing stays still for long
Where meaning arrives sidesways
I want to thank you for being here for the premiere of How to Cultivate Your REM Cycle. These performances are the culmination of a collaborative creative process that unfolded across three phases over the past year. Its development—from the seed of an idea to this moment—has been shaped by research, reflection, and patience in pursuit of questions that resist easy answers. This work exists because of a deeply committed team of collaborators, and I am profoundly grateful for their belief, rigor, and brilliance.
I also want to extend my thanks to everyone who donated to Hatch Dance’s 2025–2026 season. This work would not be possible without your support.
Please enjoy the performance. There will be a 15-minute intermission between Act I and Act II.
With gratitude,
Helen Hatch
Artistic Director, Hatch Dance
About
Hatch Dance is a contemporary dance company based in Minneapolis. Founded in 2017 by choreographer and dancer Helen Hatch, Hatch Dance creates innovative original work that combine dance, music, and theater. Collaboration is the cornerstone of Hatch Dance’s productions. We have witnessed the power of a collaborative creative process between artists and how it manifests far beyond the performance. Through the deep listening necessary to make art and the trust that is developed, truths are shared and perspectives are altered.
Since our founding we have partnered with artists of various disciplines (dance, theater, music, film and design) resulting in performances that are enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. Our debut performance, Isotope, presented by The Southern Theater, was named a “2018 Top Ten Twin Cities Dance Performance” by the Star Tribune. Since then, we have been commissioned by The Cowles Center, Saint Paul Ballet, Penelope Freeh, and Aveda, participated in The Southern Theater’s Performance Partnership Program, The Cowles Center’s MERGE program, and Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Festival. In 2020, Hatch Dance and fellow dance company HoneyWorks joined forces to launch Live @ The Shed, an annual outdoor dance event that culminates in the premiere of a new collaborative ensemble work that celebrates a large cast of dancers from the Twin Cities.
