Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,

there is a field. I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,

the world is too full to talk about.

Ideas, language, even the phrase each other doesn’t make any sense.

- Rumi

A Note from Helen Hatch & Jon Ferguson:

We acknowledge that this event takes place on the traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of Indigenous peoples, and we stand in solidarity with immigrant, undocumented, and mixed-status families in the Twin Cities, across Minnesota, and beyond whose lives are being destabilized by enforcement and detention.

The seeds of this project began in conversation via a messaging app, with nearly 4,000 miles of space between us. We first met while working on a production in 2018, where we discovered a strong artistic connection. Reconnecting, we acknowledged a shared desire to work and create together - rooted in deep respect for one another’s artistry and process.

This work grew from questions around presence, joy, and personal happiness: how we cultivate them in the midst of uncertainty, how we live with grief, fear, and challenge, and how we continue to navigate times of darkness while stepping toward light. We recognize this as a fragile, fleeting, and ongoing process. What you see here is our most honest expression of that journey, right now.

We are deeply grateful to the ensemble of performers and musicians, the artistic and technical team, the Southern Theater (where the work originally premiered), and The Depot for making this experience possible. And thank you for being here (with us), for offering your time, presence and imagination to this experience.

See you in the field.

About

Hatch Dance is a contemporary dance company based in Minneapolis. Founded in 2017 by choreographer and dancer Helen Hatch, Hatch Dance creates innovative original work that combine dance, music, and theater. Collaboration is the cornerstone of Hatch Dance’s productions. We have witnessed the power of a collaborative creative process between artists and how it manifests far beyond the performance. Through the deep listening necessary to make art and the trust that is developed, truths are shared and perspectives are altered.

Since our founding we have partnered with artists of various disciplines (dance, theater, music, film and design) resulting in performances that are enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. Our debut performance, Isotope, presented by The Southern Theater, was named a “2018 Top Ten Twin Cities Dance Performance” by the Star Tribune. Since then, we have been commissioned by The Cowles Center, Saint Paul Ballet, Penelope Freeh, and Aveda, participated in The Southern Theater’s Performance Partnership Program, The Cowles Center’s MERGE program, and Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Festival. In 2020, Hatch Dance and fellow dance company HoneyWorks joined forces to launch Live @ The Shed, an annual outdoor dance event that culminates in the premiere of a new collaborative ensemble work that celebrates a large cast of dancers from the Twin Cities.
